*We owe the phrase “wet your whistle” to English pub goers long ago who would blow a whistle baked into the rim or handle of their ceramic mugs when they needed a refill.

*We also owe the phrase “mind your Ps and Qs” to English pub patrons, who drank Pints and Quarts of ale. When the drinkers got out of hand, the bartender would shout, “Mind your pints and quarts and settle down!”

*4,000 years ago in Babylon, it was a custom for a bride’s father to give the groom all the Mead (a honey beer) that he could drink. Because their calendar was lunar based, this period was called the “honey month.” Thus we have the word “honeymoon.”

*Back when poet and playwright William Shakespeare was alive, mattresses were tied to the bed frame with ropes. Each night, the ropes would be pulled making the mattress firmer to sleep on. Hence, “Goodnight, sleep tight.”

*Only John Hancock and Charles Thomson signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The majority of the rest of the signatures were made on August 2, 1776, with the last signature not being placed until August 7, 1776.

*The next time you see a statue of a person on a horse, know this: if both of the horse’s front legs are in the air, the person to whom the statue is dedicated died in battle, if there is only one front leg in the air, the person died due to wounds obtained in battle, and if all four horse legs are on the ground, the person died naturally.
