Some sad news to report from the increasingly chaotic and odd world of animals – the calf born with two faces in Virginia, has died.
“She was just laying there like she was sound asleep,” said Dairyman Kirk Heldreth. “It broke our hearts.” The unique calf was found on the morning of Friday, February 2nd. Heldreth assumes that Star died from complications due to the deformity. No one really expected the baby cow to survive long after birth, but it’s sad just the same; the farming family grew quite attached to the miracle animal.
Dozens of visitors a day came to see the miraculous baby, hence the name Star. Amazingly, Star was able to feed from a bottle, despite having one upper jaw and two lower ones. She weighed about 80 pounds and seemed in good health at the time of her death.
Heldreth didn’t want to really display the calf while she was alive, but now that she’s dead…the body has been shipped to a taxidermist in upstate New York to be prepared for display in a Ripley’s Believe It or Not museum. According to the dairy farmer, Ripley’s is paying for the shipping, but he is asking for no other financial benefit.
“If I had wanted to do that,” Heldreth said, “I would have sold her to the circus a long time ago.”
No one was available for comment at Ripley’s.
