Happy Mother’s Day!
I am not a mother myself, but my mom is. So are my sister, and a bunch of my friends.
Mother’s Day was never a huge holiday in my house growing up. Usually my mother just wanted me and my sister to leave her alone for the day. Now I just call her, which is fine by her. This year is my sister’s first Mother’s Day, so I sent her a great gift from PajamaGram.com. She called me on Friday when she got it and sounded really thrilled. The pajamas, she said, would be worn on Mother’s Day. I hope she gets to wear them the whole day.
Ever wonder when and how Mother’s Day got its start? Well, there are several answers…
*In Ancient Greece, Mother’s Day was a day to celebrate the Mother Goddess, Rhea.
*In the United States, Mother’s Day was first observed in 1872, as a day dedicated to peace.
*In 1907 Mother’s Day as we now know it was established by Anna Jarvis. She also started the tradition of wearing a carnation in honor of your mother; a colored one if she’s still alive, a white one if she’s passed on.
