Road Rage. Look Out! It’s Everywhere!

Congratulations Miami! For the second year in a row, you’ve been named the city with the most road rage; with New York and Boston coming in a close second and third, respectively.

This prestigious title is courtesy of the Connecticut-based AutoVantage, an automobile membership club offering roadside assistance and travel services.

“You don’t want to know what I’ve seen,” says Erik Pinto of South Miami, “I’ve seen everything. I’m from L.A., and we don’t see the crazy drivers [out there] that you see here.”

The city with the least amount of road rage is Portland, Oregon. A spot held last year by Minneapolis-St. Paul, which fell to the middle of the list this year.

Impatient motorists were sited most often as the cause of road rage, followed by poor driving in the fast lanes.

Here’s the complete list of the 25 most rage filled city roads in the U.S.:

1. Miami
2. New York
3. Boston
4. Los Angeles
5. Washington, D.C.
6. Phoenix
7. Chicago
8. Sacramento, Calif.
9. Philadelphia
10. San Francisco
11. Houston
12. Atlanta
13. Detroit
14. Minneapolis-St. Paul
15. Baltimore
16. Tampa, Fla.
17. San Diego
18. Cincinnati
19. Cleveland
20. Denver
21. Dallas-Ft. Worth
22. St. Louis
23. Seattle-Tacoma
24. Pittsburgh
25. Portland, Ore.

The survey was conducted via telephone between January and March by Prince Market Research and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points. More than 2,500 drivers who regularly commute in 25 major metropolitan areas were asked to rate road rage and rude driving in their cities.

Oh, how I wish they had called me. I know a thing or two about road rage. Mainly, the rage that fills me almost every time I’m on the road.

I would like to preface my thoughts by saying that I try my hardest to always leave myself enough time if I have a ways to drive. You never know what could happen once you’re out there.

And I admit…I am one of those drivers who talks on the phone, play with the radio dial, and rifle around in my purse on the floor behind my seat. But, I am also extremely aware of my surroundings and the cars on all sides of me. My grandfather in Mississippi taught me how to drive using the rear view mirrors. It’s important to know what the person in front of you is doing, but the person behind you is just as important. Especially when brakes are involved.

I could go on forever about all my driving pet-peeves, but I’ll just give you my top ten.

10. People who don’t get to the left enough so those who want to turn right (i.e. me!) are able to do so.

9. Trucks and buses in the fast lane – especially during non commute times.

8. People who try to change lanes into me.

7. People who don’t use turn signals.

6. Not being able to see over, through or around the car in front of me.

5. People who don’t know how to merge properly. It’s every other car folks! Think “zipper”!

4. People who have cocktail parties at stop signs or green lights. The left turn arrow only stays green for just so long you know.

3. People who don’t move over to let faster traffic pass (i.e. me again!). If cars are passing you on your right, you’re probably driving too slow and need to get over to the right at least one lane; safely, of course.

2. You-know-what’s who drive slowly until I try to pass them, then they speed up so I can’t. Then slow down again once I am behind them. And then speed up if I try and pass them again. My goodness how that annoys me!

1. Slow people in the fast lane. Here’s a good rule of thumb…if the speed limit is 55, but people in the far left lane are going 60, do not enter that lane unless you intend to go 60 as well (see also, pet-peeve #3).

Road Rage is passe. It’s very 1990’s. Deal with it. Get over it.

    Hey Farfa,
It can’t be all that passe if it’s still everywhere. I was out driving on a freeway the other day and witnessed a guy in a blue truck trying to run a little red car off the road. He went out onto the left shoulder to pass another truck and catch up to the red car, and almost caused a 3-car accident. Then when the red car exited the freeway, the blue truck followed it, got along side of it on the right and tried to run it off the road. If that’ s not road rage, I don’t know what is. Thanks for your comment.
