On July 11, 1969, Harland Stonecipher was involved in a head-on collision. He got away with his life, as well as a mountain of legal fees. Sure, he had car insurance and medical insurance and even a life insurance policy, but he didn’t have any protection from all the legal bills that quickly piled up. So Harland turned to Europe and began researching the legal expense plan industry over there.
In 1972 all the pieces came together and PrePaid Legal Services was born. Now, over 1.5 million families in the U.S. and Canada use services provided by PrePaid Legal Services.
Are you a member? Do you like the service? Would you recommend it to your friends and family?
PrePaid Legal Services also offers Identity Theft Shield – a prepaid legal way to credit monitoring and credit restoration in the event of identity theft.
PrePaid Legal Services is backed by CourtTV and holds a strong spot on the New York Stock Exchange. PrePaid Legal Stock Quote
We can all think of traditional reasons for needing a lawyer. PrePaid Legal Services can think of those too, and go beyond…
- You’re tired of hidden bank fees
- You get a speeding ticket
- A jeweler sells you defective goods
- Your neighbor’s dog barks non stop day and night
- Your landlord enters your apartment without permission
- Your spouse claims a right to your earnings
- A record club sends you stuff after you cancel your membership
- A property manager refuses to rent to you
- You’re fired
- You receive social security, disability, or Medicaid
- A creditor tries illegal collection tactics
- A former employee refuses to pay your final compensation
- Your child needs special education in public school
- You have a property line dispute with your neighbor’s new fence
- A retail store won’t accept the return of defective merchandise
- You receive a letter from a creditor and it’s not your debt
- A bank unjustly turns you into a credit bureau
- You own a small business
It can be said that being a member of PrePaid Legal Services is like having an umbrella in your car – you may not need it today or tomorrow, but you sure will be happy you have it next week when it pours.
A co-worker at my office job is a member of PrePaid Legal and asked me to join, which I ultimately did. I would love to hear your thoughts and feelings on the company and the services it offers.

Pre-Paid Legal Services helps the consumer understand their legal issues and what they can do legally to help their situation. Sometimes a retainer is paid under a reduced discount with a referral Attorney in the system. A great service and much appreciated.

I joined PPL back in 2002, it’s hard to believe that it’s been so long!
I joined because it sounded like a good way to make money. The line “everyone could use a lawyer” sounded so true.
But it’s been over 5 years and I’ve only used it once — to discuss my options on a renter breaking his lease. After that situation I learned that going to court is not easy or advised. Most people will tell you to do whatever you can to stay out of court because it takes a long time to get a settlement and a lot of money.
So now I’ve learned how to Google statutes to back up my claims without the need for a lawyer.
I’m currently trying to cancel my membership, but I’m very concerned that it’s going to be a hassle. There are a lot of testimonies online that report PPL as being difficult to cancel and stating that they will charge an account after the owner has tried to cancel by phone and/or mail!!
I’ve decided to quietly put a stop on my bank account then hope they think I’m a delinquent associate and stop charging me.
Wish me luck.

Actually, you just need to call them AND send them a cancel request IN WRITING. Call customer service and they will give you the instructions. It is not a scam, you really can cancel. Trust me, I know a few people who have canceled with no problems whatsoever.

Adam, I hope that you have been successful in cancelling your membership with PPL. I called today to cancel as well, and was transferred to the “cancellation” department, and was given a choice to have the cancellation letter faxed or mailed to me. I chose fax, and it was on my fax machine by the time I hung up with the rep. The form has 3 choices to choose from when sending in your request, mail, fax or email. I faxed my form as well as email. But you must include the following info with your request: Member Name, Member number, phone number, address, and fax number. Here is a number for you to call for cancellations: 1-888-494-8519. In writing, is says “To allow you time to complete your cancellation request, your account will not be drafted for 30 days ……….Please allow 7-10 days for delivery of the waiver to Customer Care. For confirmation, call 1-888-473-7149.” I’m waiting…..I will keep you posted.
