She merely declined to speak on the subject, just as she doesn't speak about her children either. Not unlike Lilly Tomlin, it's more a matter of choosing not to "say those words" for professional reasons than being closeted. Had Jodie "come out" in a big cover story in People 10 years ago, I suspect she'd have had significantly less opportunity to star in films.... it sucks, but there it is. Although I am offended by closeted celebs who actively work to appear hetero - dating and marrying the opposite sex, making a big show out of adopting or having children, I can't really quibble with someone who simply keeps their private life private so they can continue to work. Anyhow, that's this gay's opinion. Nonetheless, it's nice to count such an intelligent and talented lady amongst our ranks.
