Today is December 22nd and this year, today is my Christmas.
There’s a new baby in the family (my nephew), so things are quite different than previous years. It’s a bit weird, but really great too. It’s a progression of life and family; my mom is having a blast being Nana, and that makes me very happy.
Last year the big gift was a desktop version of the infamous Leg Lamp from A Christmas Story, which we gave to my wonderful and quirky step-dad (we gave him a bar of Lifebuoy Soap). It was a great moment. About fifteen minutes earlier he had unwrapped a single light bulb; which obviously made no sense to him at the time, but the rest of us were quite amused with our gift creativity. When he opened the lamp and realized exactly what it was, he immediately grabbed his light bulb and plugged it in. We set the lamp up on a TV tray in front of the living room window and that night went across the street to look at it. It was beautiful.
This year, my step-dad got a leg lamp puzzle (which actually came in a small wooden crate, unlike the lamp last year that came in a stupid cardboard box). I think the gift wrappings had barely been cleared away before he had his card table out and the puzzle pieces strewn upon it.
The desk lamp is awesome, and the puzzle was fun to do, but nothing beats the original….
