Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

Today is Christmas Eve. Let’s take a moment to remember that the holiday is about family, love, and caring for others. It’s about reaching out and touching someone. Don’t let the advertisers fool you, Christmas is not about spending money – it’s about spending quality time with family.

I’m in Berkeley with my family. We’re hanging out, nothing fancy, and watching movies. So far we’ve watched A Christmas Story only once, which is a little unusual, but if I want to see it again I’ll just have my step dad act it out, as he knows practically every line.

One of my favorite Christmas movies while I was growing up is not a traditional holiday movie; it’s actually considered a romance which isn’t quite my style but I love musicals. If you’ve never seen Meet Me in St. Louis, I strongly suggest you do. It was made in 1944 and stars the iconic Judy Garland. The two most known songs from the movie are The Trolley Song and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, sung by Judy Garland, as seen below…

Have I ever mentioned how much I love Wikipedia? Because I do! Thank you Wikipedia for all the wonderful information you’ve supplied me with over the last year.

Awfully glad you’re plugging M.M.I.SL – one of my all time favorite films. A little over a year ago I had the pleasure of a half hour phone conversation with Mr. Hugh Martin, composer of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”. He’s pushing 100 , sharp as a tack, and for a classic film fanatic like myself, it was like talking with God. He did, after all, write one of the most popular and enduring Christmas songs of all time. (Not to mention The Trolley Song, The Boy Next Door, etc, etc…)

F.Y.I. – Mr. Martin ADORED Judy, but hated his tenure at MGM in the 40’s – he says everyone was so status obsessed on the lot that he found it oppresive and depressing.

Anyone out there who loves the film and its classic tunes as much as I do might consider sending him a card and letting him know how much you’ve enjoyed his work – I’m sure it would make his day!
