Sid Vicious was an OG of Punk, and on this day in 1979 he went on trial for the October 1978 stabbing death of his girlfriend/manager, 20-year-old go-go dancer, Nancy Spungen. Vicious was accused of stabbing and then leaving Spungen to die while he visited the local methadone clinic.
In the beginning Sid Vicious claimed his innocence, but then the D.A. said they had a confession. On February 1, 1979 Sid Vicious was released from jail on bail. The next night, February 2nd, he attended a party at his new girlfriend’s house. At some point during the evening, the 21-year-old bass player and accused killer injected a lethal dose of heroin.

In 1986 the movie Sid and Nancy, starring Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb was released to critical acclaim. The movie revolved around the sex, drugs, and punk rock relationship of Vicious and Spungen. The death scene, however, is purely conjecture – the only two people who know for sure what happened the night Nancy Spungen died are Nancy Spungen and Sid Vicious, and they’re not going to be talking any time soon.
For those not in the Punk scene, the Sex Pistols are most notably known for God Save the Queen…
