Last Thanksgiving I posted the address of a VFW Post in Virginia, which was accepting Christmas gifts for wounded soldiers.

The other day, Big John (who gave me that address) reminded me that such gifts and kind words are accepted all year round. So many wonderful causes are forgotten about after the holidays – giving thanks to our recovering American soldiers should not be one of them.

I believe I’ve said before that I don’t support the war in Iraq, but I fully and completely support the troops. They put their lives on the line and take their job seriously. Sometimes, they lose their life; sometimes they survive but are seriously wounded – both physically and emotionally – and need our support even more. It’s sad and unnerving that the returning wounded soldiers are so often forgotten once they’ve come home; you don’t hear their names on the news.

And I most certainly support the VFW.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, or simply VFW, is an American organization whose members are current or former members of the U.S. armed forces.

The VFW became a government-chartered non-profit organization by an act of the United States Congress in 1936; as such, it receives no funding from United States tax receipts and is supported by charitable donations.

VFW works on behalf of American veterans by lobbying Congress for better veterans’ health care and benefits. The VFW also maintains a nationwide organization of employees and volunteers to assist veterans with their VA disability claims.
