As you know, I turned 30 this past Monday. What you may not know is that the Saturday before, I saw Professional Humoredian Doug Benson at Tommy T’s Comedy & Steakhouse in Pleasanton, CA to kick off my birthday weekend (I apologize for the posting delay, but I just got the pictures).
My excellent company for the evening was made up of my boyfriend (who shall remain nameless for various reasons), as well as two of my closest friends, Kyrie and Rhobby.
To say the night was totally awesome is an understatement. I don’t even know where to begin.
I guess I’ll start with dinner.
We dined at The Cheesecake Factory in Pleasanton, CA where I had the Shepherd’s pie and a cocktail called Georgia Peach (can you guess why I chose those two particular items?). Both were delicious and the Shepherd’s pie provided substantial leftovers.
When we were being led to our table, I turned to my party and sternly told them that I did not want the wait staff singing Happy Birthday to me or any sort of crap like it. So, of course, my wonderful boyfriend tells them it’s my birthday – he thought I didn’t know, but I heard the tail end of it. Long story short, the waiters sang and I got cheesecake…
We had some time to kill before the comedy show so we hit up a bar where I had two rum and cokes. Or was it three? Then it was off to laugh our asses off.
There were three comics lined up for the night; first was Chris Ray of Oakland, CA (please tell me if I’m spelling his name wrong) who was pretty funny and reminded me of someone I had a crush on in high school. Second was the very funny Graham Elwood who had just come back from entertaining the troops in Afghanistan, and had all of us busting up as he bantered back and forth with some blondes in the front row (I don’t think they actually got that the joke was on them).
Random Fact #1: Tommy T’s Comedy & Steakhouse used to be a Hungry Hunter restaurant.
Random Fact #2: Red Bull and sugar free Rockstar is a great drink; especially when I drink one right after the other, after the other.
Then it was time for Doug Benson. And the man lived up to his reputation. It was great! We were at the 9:30 show, which was after the 7:30 show, so I can only imagine how much super high fun Doug was having between the shows.
I’ve been a fan of Doug Benson for years; ever since I first saw him on VH1’s Best Week Ever. His expressions, his dry humor – it was all right up my alley. I liked him even more when the Marijuana-Logues and Super High Me hit the atmosphere.
Now I was seeing him live – and I couldn’t have been more than 20 feet away. It was a blast! I have no idea how long he was up there, but it wasn’t nearly long enough.
As we left the restaurant, Doug was standing by the door and I knew I couldn’t let the opportunity pass…
My party and I were slowly heading towards our car when we noticed Doug heading towards the parking lot as well. Another opportunity I knew I couldn’t miss. I’m not going to lie, the next part of the night is a bit hazy; but I do remember asking Doug how he got started and he said his friends made him do it. Then I asked him what he thought he would be doing with his life right now if he hadn’t gone the way he’d gone. He stood and thought for a several moments and finally said, “I don’t know…but that’s the great thing about life, right?”
Yes, Doug Benson, that IS the great thing about life. You know what else is a great thing about life? Getting to meet people like Doug Benson.
Like I said, things were a bit hazy.
Oh, but the night didn’t quite end there…
Yes, that’s me.
Remind you of anyone?..
