At 3 a.m. this past Wednesday Abraham Biggs announced via a website that he was going to kill himself. By 3 p.m. that day, the 19-year-old Broward College student was dead on his father’s bed. And a whole lot of people watched; some even egged him on.
By the time the authorities were called and police arrived at Biggs’ home it was too late. And people were still watching. The reality of the situation didn’t really sink in until after the police got there and were seen on the webcam standing over Abraham’s body.
The web cam ran the whole time.
“so that’s 12 hours of watching,” said the victim’s sister, Rosalind Bigg. “They got hits, they got viewers, nothing happened for hours.”
According to an autopsy Abraham Biggs died as a result of mixing opiates and benzodiazepine, which his family says he was taking for his bipolar disorder.
Sadly, Biggs is not the first person to commit suicide while people watched online. Wendy Crane, an investigator with the Broward County medical examiner’s office said she knows of a Florida man who shot himself in the head. Last year, a British man hanged himself during an online chat session.
“This is very, very sudden and unexpected for us,” [Abraham’s] sister said. “It boggles the mind. We don’t understand.”

How sad. It just reaffirms my feelings about all this new technology can be such a double edged sword. Why couldn’t anyone call the authorities to do a “wellness” check on Briggs?
Have we, as a society, gotten so calloused?
