The autopsy results for Billy Mays were released today – the findings were obvious and a little surprising all at the same time.
The primary cause of death was listed as “lethal arrhythmia of the heart caused by hypertensive and atherosclerotic heart disease”; simply put Billy Mays died of a massive heart attack.
That’s the obvious part.
The surprising part however, is sadly not all that surprising in the world of celebrities.
According to the Billy Mays autopsy results, the superstar pitchman had quite the prescription drug cocktail in his system.
… there were some trace amounts of cocaine found in his system. Dr. Leszek Chrostowski, who was the medical examiner in charge, stated that while Mays was not intoxicated or under the influence of any drugs at the time of his death, he had probably used the drug in the days before his death, “cocaine use caused or contributed to the development of [Mays’] heart disease and thereby contributed to his death”.
The medical examiner also found traces of tramadol and hydrocodone and oxycodone in his system, which, mixed with the cocaine, may have been a lethal combination. Furthermore, there was also alcohol in his system.
That’s a lot of drugs. Billy Mays’ wife, of course, isn’t buying it.
“We believe [the release] contains speculative conclusions that are frankly unnecessary and tend to obscure the conclusion that Billy suffered from chronic, untreated hypertension,” said Deborah Mays, Mays’ widow, in a statement issued Friday, “Given the hectic nature and pace of Billy’s life, especially during the past 10 months of his exhaustive travel across the country, it was not surprising to hear that hypertension was the cause of his death.”
Hmm, I don’t know about this one. I mean, on the one hand it’s hard to believe that Billy Mays took so many drugs – he seemed like a man who did his research, and would know about the hazards. But on the other hand, prescription drug abuse is running rampant and quite frankly, nothing surprises me anymore.
Hey, have you noticed that the autopsy results of celebrities who have died with drugs in their system never mention marijuana? Just pills, booze, and some coke – but not weed. Except for Steve McNair – he had weed in his system – but his death wasn’t drug related so it doesn’t count.
Anyway, my point is…..how about legalizing marijuana, taxing the hell out of it, and putting part of that revenue towards a war on prescriptions drugs. Seriously, things are getting out of hand with the pill poppers and doctor shoppers. Just a thought.
You know…..now that I think about it, knowing Billy Mays had cocaine in his system…..well, let’s just say his hyperactivity doesn’t seem so out of place anymore.
