Daryl Hannah Arrested During Protest At White House

Actress and huge environmental activist Daryl Hannah was arrested Tuesday while participating in a protest against the Keystone XL oil pipeline in front of the White House in Washington, D.C.

The Keystone Pipeline System is a pipeline system to transport synthetic crude oil from the Athabasca Oil Sands in northeastern Alberta, Canada to refineries in Illinois and Oklahoma, and further to the U.S. Gulf Coast. It consists of the operational “Keystone Pipeline” and proposed Keystone XL (Keystone Expansion) pipeline. Keystone XL has faced lawsuits from oil refineries, criticism from environmentalists and some members of the United States Congress.

… Environmental groups, concerned citizens, and politicians have raised a number of concerns about the potential impacts of the Keystone XL extension. One concern is that the pipeline could pollute air and water supplies and harm migratory birds and other wildlife.[17] It will cross the Sandhills in Nebraska, the large wetland ecosystem, and the Ogallala Aquifer, one of the largest reserves of fresh water in the world.[32] The Ogallala Aquifer spans eight states, provides drinking water for two million people, and supports $20 billion in agriculture.

The video below shows 50-year-old Daryl Hannah being removed from the crowd and arrested and the other protestors sing and cheer for her. About 100 people were taken into custody after the police reportedly asked the group to leave three times. When they refused, the arrests began.

“Sometimes it’s necessary to sacrifice your freedom for a greater freedom,” Hannah said. “And we want to be free from the horrible death and destruction that fossil fuels cause, and have a clean energy future.” [source]
