Martha Stewart Likes To Pee With The Door Open

It’s true! According to her daughter, Alexis, anyway.

When I found out years ago that Martha Stewart had a grown daughter (probably around the time she went to prison for being a greedy liar) my first thoughts included, “Wait, what? Martha Stewart is straight?” and “Someone actually had sex with that lady?” Yes, I know, I have the hard-hitting questions.

Anyway, it turns out that although Martha Stewart has made an empire out of being fun and fancy, she wasn’t anywhere near a love-through-hugs kind of mother.

In fact, to hear Alexis tell it, Martha Stewart has some sort of multiple personality thing going on; warm and welcoming to the world, but standoffish at home.

In her new book, Whateverland: Learning to Live Here, co-authored with Jennifer Koppelman Hutt, Alexis Stewart, 46, makes some interesting claims and throws out a bunch of embarrassing revelations about her mother.

“Martha does everything better! You can’t win,” Alexis Stewart writes of her 70-year-old mom, according to an excerpt obtained by U.K.’s Daily Mail. “If I didn’t do something perfectly, I had to do it again. … I grew up with a glue gun pointed at my head.”

As for holidays, Alexis – who recently welcomed a daughter of her own, Jude – writes that special moments like Halloween and Christmas held little excitement for her mother.

“Martha was not interested in being kid friendly,” Alexis writes. “She used to make me wrap my own presents. She would hand me things right before Christmas and say, ‘Now wrap these but don’t look inside.’”

Side Note: One of my older sisters used to trick me into wrapping my own Christmas presents. It took me about three years to finally catch on.

On Halloween: “There were no costumes. There was no anything. We turned off all the lights and pretended we weren’t home,” she recalls in the book.

That sounds pretty crappy. I would never deny a child the shear delight that is Halloween.

Stewart also alleges in the book that Martha has a habit of urinating with the bathroom door open; that she neglected to keep any prepared foods in the house when Alexis was young; that her mother is a hoarder who had “a very hands-off approach to child rearing;” and that Martha refused to buy her a bra when she hit puberty.

You’d think such a childhood would pit Alexis against her mom, but it seems to be quite the opposite. The two are very close, and Alexis even dedicated the book to Martha.

For her part, Martha Stewart is taking her daughter’s allegations in stride – and getting her own cuts in at the same time.

“She’s her own person,” Martha writes in the book of her daughter. “She makes up her own mind. I sometimes try to offer advice, but if it’s not taken, so be it. She really did pay attention. She really does know how to do everything. And still she chooses not to follow in my footsteps.”
